Words are not enough to express my deepest appreciation for all
the people that helped me in this journey. Starting with my dissertation
committee, Dr. Leary my committee chair, who was responsible for
reintroducing me to Moacir Gadotti and Paulo Freire in my first
class and supporting me until the finish line. I do appreciate the
wise feedback and focus that Dr. Grodzki brought to my work, helping
me expand my horizons. I am also thankful to Dr. Cipolla for not
letting me “slip and sliding away” and his invaluable
advice from the very beginning.
As I have told him before, I am forever grateful to Dr. Mauro Porto
for his generosity not only with his time but also with his knowledge.
I appreciate the fundamental contributions and suggestions he offered
via e-mail and in our meeting at the University of Brasília.
The staff of the Lynn Library had been kind and patient with all
my requests and I do appreciate their effort in helping me with
this academic endeavor. Special thanks are in order to Mr. Clem
Imhoff and Melissa Johnson, for their generous assistance throughout
this process.
Thanks to Mrs. Ann Johnson who patiently edited my work.
I am immensely grateful to the support I received from my friends
here and in Brazil. I am very lucky to have this kind of friendship
in my life, which offered me unconditional love and support in my
good and bad days. “Muitíssimo obrigada galera.”
My gratitude to all the participants in the “El Clon”
telenovela-world forum. I learned so much with them, and I do miss
the time I spent getting to know these wonderful people.
I have a special thanks to my family, particularly my sister Neyde
and my niece Kenia, for putting up with me and the mess I made in
the computer room. Thank you for the encouragement and crucial support
that made this work possible.
I am so grateful to my parents, my mother D. Maria, my father Sr.
Oliveiros, who always believed in me. I know you guys are still
looking after me, and I love that.
Dedication
In memory of my Mom and Dad, my number-one supporters.
