Sarasota, Florida

Sarasota is a city located in Sarasota County,
Florida. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population
of 52,715. It is the county seat of Sarasota County.
Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium and Marie Selby Botanical Gardens
are some of Sarasota's notable attractions, as well as the Ringling
Museum of Art, Florida state art museum.
Colleges in Sarasota include the New College of Florida, a public
liberal arts college, the Ringling School of Art and Design, a school
of art, music, and design, and the Sarasota campus of the University
of South Florida.
This city is home to the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport,
which also serves Bradenton, Florida.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total
area of 67.2 km² (25.9 mi²). 38.6 km² (14.9 mi²)
of it is land and 28.6 km² (11.0 mi²) of it is water.
The total area is 42.58% water.
Sarasota Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 52,715 people, 23,427 households,
and 12,064 families residing in the city. The population density
is 1,366.9/km² (3,539.8/mi²). There are 26,898 housing
units at an average density of 697.5/km² (1,806.2/mi²).
The racial makeup of the city is 76.91% White, 16.02% African American,
0.35% Native American, 1.02% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 3.74%
from other races, and 1.91% from two or more races. 11.92% of the
population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 23,427 households out of which 19.7% have children under
the age of 18 living with them, 35.3% are married couples living
together, 12.3% have a female householder with no husband present,
and 48.5% are non-families. 38.3% of all households are made up
of individuals and 16.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years
of age or older. The average household size is 2.12 and the average
family size is 2.81.
In the city the population is spread out with 18.4% under the age
of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to
64, and 22.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is
41 years. For every 100 females there are 94.6 males. For every
100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $34,077, and the
median income for a family is $40,398. Males have a median income
of $26,604 versus $23,510 for females. The per capita income for
the city is $23,197. 16.7% of the population and 12.4% of families
are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 28.5% of
those under the age of 18 and 7.7% of those 65 and older are living
below the poverty line.
