Brat Camp
In an effort to keep up with the other networks,
a new teen show has hit the air called "Brat Camp." The show is based on what is
referred to as a wilderness program. As the show projects this
can be a very difficult option for youth. We are an advocate of
a more subtle long term approach, rather than 30-45 day options
similar to this camp. One downside to most wilderness programs
is the inability to control the elements. Most wilderness programs
probably have addressed this issue, but it may still be a concern
for both the parents and those sponsoring the program. Short term
programs such as "Brat Camp" may be successful and the correct
option for some youth. In our opinion, a long term program (12-18
months) focusing on education, personal accountability, and a transition
phase which prepares the youth and family for the reintegration
process offers the best help for a troubled teen.
